In Our Shoes

Emma Wears ‘Marcia’

Another week, another #InOurShoes blog, this time featuring Emma and Steve who married in their local church before heading to the Wood Hall Hotel & Spa for their reception. Their theme saw neutral tones with lilac, creams and greens used throughout.

We absolutely love this wedding and know it will bring you the inspiration you need for the perfect day!

How did you and your partner meet?

Whilst at university together in Leeds, we were both members of the athletics team. We knew each for over a year before we got together in 2008 and so were together over 10 years before we got married. We’ve always done things at our own pace, despite numerous Aunties asking when we were getting married for the past 7 years. We’d lived together for a few years but wanted to buy our first home together before thinking about organising a wedding. Ste proposed a few months after we moved in.

Tell us about your proposal – where, when and how?

It was the most perfect day. Ste had told me about 6 years previous, he knew exactly how he was going to propose and it was truly worth the wait. We both have a love for the outdoors and he knew my favourite mountain was Coniston. Whilst we were staying with my parents we’d arranged a walk up to the summit of Coniston, which was all Ste’s idea but made me believe it was a joint decision.

Despite being the end of December, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. We set off from my parents’ house early, and strangely enough my dad had woken up early and was waiting in the kitchen with a cup of coffee to wave us off, obviously being the only other person who knew what was going on. As we reversed out the drive, I said to Ste, “why’s my dad waving us off”? My dad phoned just as we approached Coniston to tell us that due to the height of the cloud over the fells near their house, we should have a cloud inversion on the summit of Coniston. These were the only things during the entire morning that caused the slightest bit of suspicion.

We took our timing walking up, stopping for photos and to get more sweets out the bag and so it took us around 90minutes to walk to the summit. My dad was spot on and after walking through the cloud, we met with the most amazing cloud inversion on the summit. There was nothing but sky above and we could see the highest summits in the lakes, also peeking through the clouds. We sat for a while and had our picnic and then Ste started to pack things away.

After a couple of selfies on top, Ste looked at me and then dropped down to one knee and pulled out a ring case from his pocket. I started crying straight away and of course I said YES!! Whilst we were walking up, I thought to myself that this would be the most perfect way for him to propose and he did. The walk down always feels better than the walk up but this time even more so. We’d pre-arranged to meet my parents and my sister and her family for lunch down in Coniston after our walk. We’re still not sure what the better reaction was, between my mum spotting the ring on my finger after I’d taken my gloves off? Pushing aside a table and 4 chairs to give me a hug. Or the reaction she gave my dad after she found out that he’d been helping Ste plan this for weeks. It really was the most perfect way to get engaged as it’s something which has a special meaning to us both. Since the engagement we’ve walked to the summit of a different mountain on the same date each year.

When and where did you get married?

I’m originally from Lincolnshire and Ste is from Lancashire and so with our families being from different sides of the country it was at first tricky to decide where to get married. After talking about it, it made sense to get married in Leeds where we met and have started our home together. We got married at the end of July last year at our local church and had the wedding Reception at Wood Hall Hotel and Spa in Linton. It was truly the most amazing venue and had everything and more that we could’ve wanted.

Did you have a specific theme or colour scheme?

Deciding on a colour scheme was tougher than I originally thought it would be. We kept it quite neutral with lilac, creams and greens used throughout.

How did you feel when you said yes to the dress?

I’d seen the dress I’d wanted before I tried any dresses on but hadn’t told any of my bridesmaids about it. My mum and I researched stockists of the designer and so I knew where I would be able to get it. We arranged a day of appointments, so that I could still try other options but when we visited the Harrogate Wedding Lounge, I told the girls that one of the dresses I’ll try on will be one that I’ve already seen. Much to my relief, the dress I’d already had my eye on was the unanimous decision of the 6 I tried on that day.

How did you choose your shoes?

Shoes were the one item which I was most worried about but the one which I had never thought about before. You always think of what you’d like your dress to look like, the flowers, the venue but I’d never thought about the shoes before. As someone who doesn’t wear heals often and has quite wide feet, I was concerned about finding a shoe that I’d be comfortable in for at least the ceremony. I’d heard about Rainbow Club before and their reputation was obviously extremely high. I went to a few different stockists and must have tried on at least 20 different pairs of shoes. I liked so many but just couldn’t make a decision.

Where did you buy your Rainbow Club shoes from?

Having spent a few weeks trying to make the right decision, I narrowed it down to 3. All 3 were completely different and asking people for their opinions made it more difficult as they all had different opinions. I went for a pair from the Rainbow Club website, which not only were everything I wanted in a shoe but were comfortable enough to stay in for the entire day. Whilst all my girls around me were changing into their flats at various stages throughout the day and evening, I stayed in my heals for the duration, which is a first for me.

What was your most favourite and memorable part of the day?

It might sound obvious but walking down the aisle towards my future husband is without doubt my favourite and most memorable part of any day, let alone my wedding day. I’d previously thought that I’d be really nervous, with everyone watching me but on the day I was just so excited to see him.

Do you have any advice for brides to be?

1) Enjoy every minute of it, from the first day of planning to the last second of the big day itself.

2) Nothing really matters. You may have all these ideas of little things for the big day and stress to make sure everything is done. In reality the only people that will know if the smallest detail isn’t done is you and your husband.

3) Make time for yourself. At some point between the wedding breakfast and evening reception, hide yourselves away for just 5 minutes. Whilst you may be together all day, everybody there also wants your time. Just taking a few minutes to be alone and relax and chat makes the world of difference.

4) Enjoy every second as this is the greatest but also the fastest day of your life.
