In Our Shoes

Kelly Wears ‘Elspeth’

Kelly, wearing our 1920’s inspired ‘Elspeth’ shoes, married her partner Ben at the Donington Park Farmhouse Hotel. This beautiful seventeenth-century farmhouse was the perfect backdrop for Kelly’s vintage theme that was accompanied with blue and blush coloured outfits. For sublime wedding inspiration, look no further.

How did you and your partner meet?

We met at work.  We both work for a house building company.  Ben worked as a site manager and I worked at our Head Offices and although we knew each other a little, we didn’t really get to know each other properly until Ben was promoted and came to work at our Head Offices.  Our desks were opposite each other and we just hit it off and things went from there!

Tell us all about your proposal – where, when and how?

Ben proposed to me on Valentines day which was lovely.  He knows I don’t like a lot of fuss so we were at home when he proposed.  We had just woken up and he had got out of bed, got something out of his bedside draw and went down on one knee.  Because I was still in bed I didn’t realise that he was down on one knee or what he was doing to begin with, I thought he had dropped something on the floor!  He presented me with the most lovely ring it was such a special moment.

When and where did you get married?

We got married at Donington Park Farmhouse Hotel.  We knew we wanted an older venue with lots of character and when we went to visit the venue we fell in love with it instantly.  It is such a beautiful and unusual place, the brick and timber barn dates back to the eighteenth century.

We had our wedding breakfast in the old pigsties which has been converted by the venue into an eating area but still has all the character and even the troughs still in place!

Did you have a specific theme or colour scheme?

Our theme was vintage and shabby-chic. Our colour scheme was blue suits for the men and blush pink dresses for the bridesmaids.  I have always loved wild flowers so these featured heavily in our bouquets and our table decorations.

How did you feel when you said yes to the dress?

When I discovered Brides of Ashby I was just passing by so didn’t have an appointment. The shop was quiet when I arrived.  They were really lovely and helped me to choose a selection of dresses to try.  I loved the low back with diamante straps and the lace feature to the bodice of my dress.  The sample dress in the shop had an ivory lining to the bodice and after looking online I saw they had an option of the same style but with a nude lining to the bodice which I felt made the lace stand out a bit more.  The shop were able to order this style for me to try and as soon as I tried it on I knew this would be my dress.

How did you choose your shoes?

A friend recommended Rainbow Club to me so I had a look in the online store.  I really loved the look of the Elspeth shoes as I knew I wanted something vintage with a stiletto heel.  What also appealed to me was the fact that Rainbow Club offer a service to dye the shoes afterwards and that I could use them again.  My wedding shoes have been re-incarnated and are now a gorgeous shade of fuscia and will be making another appearance at our friends wedding in two weeks time!

Where did you buy your Rainbow Club shoes from?

What was your most favourite and memorable part of the day?

It would be difficult to choose just one part.  The whole day was amazing I would say every moment was my favourite moment!  We did have quite a funny moment when the registrar got Ben’s name wrong during the vows and called him by our Master of Ceremony’s name.  That created a few giggles and the laughter eased our nerves a little bit.

Do you have any advice for brides to be?

In the final week before your wedding take some time to “savour the moment” and enjoy the final stages of your planning and that excitement you will feel in the run up to the big day.  Also on the wedding day itself make sure to spend a bit of time for just you and your new husband to stand back, take it all in and really enjoy the day because it really does go so quickly.
